Likewise, Corum knows how to imbue a healthy amount of fantasy in their watches and make them perfectly legitimate luxury timepieces. Corum has released a number of interesting and high quality watches (many of them limited editions) over the years. For whatever reason, a large number of them have features a skull and other parts of a skeleton. They aren't spooky per se, but they are certainly avant garde and not for everyone. They are certainly for me though, and I love these mostly limited edition watches from Corum.
Perhaps I should find a couple of Jaeger LeCoultre sales people and ask them what makes their watches "real?" Those would be some interesting answers, lathered with a thick coating of, "who are you to ask" and a layer of "if you have enough money to buy one of these watches you really shouldn't care." Ahh...sales...

Men Watch LIMES NIGHTFLIGHT AUTOMATIC ETA 2824 2 NO RESERVE
Time Remaining: 6d 2h 2m
Inside you have the familiar high quality Swiss ETA 2894 movement with a 30 minute chronograph and big date module. Each integrated nicely in the bi-compax subdial design. Notice the month indicator window between "4" and "5" o'clock. The good thing about the calendar in this watch is that it is an annual calendar. That means it known the difference between a 30 and 31 day month. You only need to adjust it in February. Like most mechanical watches of this nature, you can view the movement through the sapphire window on the caseback.
First, there is a bit of actual moon dust on each of the faces. The moon dust has been certified as actually being from moon rocks, which coincidentally happen to be of the more rare elements on the Earth. The metal is taken from the Soyuz space craft (for the rusted steel claws on the bezel) and steel and titanium from Apollo XI is incorporated into the watch case. Lastly, along with the rubber strap seen on the watch, each comes with a special fiber strap that contains 'fibers' from spacesuits worn on the ISS (International Space Station). Yea, it is pretty gimmicky, but everyone reading this is thinking how cool it is. Still, it is not cool enough that you are going to sell off your possessions to own one.
The watch has a cool feature you don't often see on watches, though it makes total sense. Rotating the bezel serves to alter the function mode of the watch. Buttons on the sides of the watch help with making adjustments. The watch itself comes in different colors; black, white, and a few others. I have to say that for being a relatively pedestrian watch (maybe a slight pun intended), it looks rather attractive. You'll have to settle for Japanese language instructions, but I think you are smart enough to make due. Certainly a more fun and interesting product that what you can get from Polar or Timex. It is also a nice a big watch at 46mm, which is not bad considering all the stuff it has packed inside. Find them online for about 5.

LUM-TEC: "We are going to have several discussion threads going to drum up ideas, then we will make polls based on these ideas and let the people vote. We will go with the popular vote."
Today is going to be a historic day, and call it a hunch, but I have a feeling that we are going to be discussing the election for a while, though I hope this isn't going to be another Floridian style ballot disaster, but I digress. Today, all Americans can appreciate a watch of this ilk. While this is a Swiss watch, the representation of the American Bald Eagle in its symbolic stance is perfectly crafted. The golden emblem does the great American seal justice. But that isn't the gist of it, this is a watch as well.
I was walking by Jewelry store at night gazing in the window to see if they had any interesting watches. Sometimes you get lucky and they don't store them away for the night. I did see a few empty watch displays to my chagrin. But then, I saw something I'd never seen before. It was an amazing looking watch winder made to look like an oil derrick. Two fittings for watches were placed, one of each side. They spun around on an axis as the gold plated oil derrick model operated to pump adrenaline from my body forcing me to utter "coooool, I so want one." Too bad they were closed, or that might have happened in a moment of temporary consumer craziness. I had to learn more about these novel watch winders, only knowing that the company who makes them is Kunstwinder, and the name of this splendid watch lover was the Industrial Collection Oil Barron. To my knowledge there aren't any other watches winders that Kunstwinder makes, and the Oil Barron is the only piece in the Industrial Collection.

The difference between the two watches is orientation. Not THAT kind of orientation (anyone can wear them), but literally the way they are positioned. The Starcruiser is in a more vertical position with the crown pointed up, while the Sidewinder is turned on its side, with the dials stacked on each other and the crown pointed in toward your arm (assuming you are wearing the watch on your left wrist). Reading the time is based on looking at two conical gauges. One features the hours, while another features the minutes. Looking down at the hour cone you see a day/night indicator as the entire rotation of the hand takes 24 hours to make a full revolution. The adjacent cones features the minutes which can be read either on the side of the cone or looking from above. The watch doesn't have a dedicated seconds display, but really, is that what you are thinking about right now? You'll further appreciate knowing that the cones are made of solid pieces of sapphire crystal, which in case you were wondering is very hard to manufacture in these shapes.

That is of course unlike the Cartier, which is extremely overpriced, but you pay for the name. Oh, and Cartier watches are really shiny, did I mention that? Admittedly, the Cartier pictured has a bit more "character" than the Laco, but that is to be expected. Suppose these watches were on a ship for the crew. The captain would adorn the Cartier, while the officers would have the Laco. Both equally functional, but the Laco more service orientated than fashion forward.
I finally decided that I wanted to write about a calendar watch for New Year's day, but I didn't know what watch to talk about. Calendar watches come in thousands of forms, and have been around practically since the time clocks have been around. There are a few highly complex calendar watches that actually do indicate the year, but none of those suited my tastes at this time. I finally decided on writing about one of the most elegant, "love it or hate it" calendar watches out there made by the boutique watch brand De Bethune. I really like the brand even though they put as much effort as is possible to keep their watches priced well outside the watch, or car buying budgets of the majority of people.

The watch is pretty big at 45mm wide, 17mm high, and with a 24mm wide bracelet. I like those dimensions on such a technical and strong looking watch. The case itself is made by Germans, and is one of its best and most well milled features. The movement inside the watch is a work-horse ETA 2824-2 movement that will put up with just about anything. I love the bracelet with its many links that make for a comfortable fit attractive looks (look at the engineering on that diver's extension). The watch also comes with a rubber strap, one of the many included accessories that you get. This particular model available further comes with two different bezels, that you can change our yourself. One is black, and the other is steel toned.
My appreciation for the Zenith Grand Port Royal Open stems beyond the fact that it is a big expensive watch. Feeling that it is a very well designed and interesting watch helps me warm to its rectangular design, which is not typically the shape I prefer my watches. In my opinion, more often than not, a square or rectangular watch focuses more on looking good by itself, rather than on a wrist. This is a huge difference as a watch can look good on a stand, but once you put it on your wrist, everything changes. Alternatively, a watch can look "ordinary" while resting on a table, transforming into a true classic when worn.

Then you have something which takes an icon of a watch, and places a feminine twist on it, and adds to the sparkle factor of course. Perrelet is know to place a rotor on the inside of the watch dial. The rotor is part of the automatic movement which winds the watch. This way people can view the movement of the rotor which is usually hidden in the back of the watch. Cleverly, Perrelet has altered the rotor to appear like a diamond covered flower. The Diamond Flower watch is really beautiful in look and execution, and even has a rare sportiness associated with it. Probably because it is on a rubber strap, but that can always be changed. This is among the most attractive Perrelet watches available. The watch is 38mm, has an automatic mechanical movement (of course), and different colors and materials options are available.
Both watches are also skeletonized. This is an interesting process whereby decoration on the movement is complimented by an actually decorated movement. Almost all necessary metal is removed, and just the bare 'skeleton' of the movement is retained. This way you can seriously appreciate all aspects of the watch. Skeletonized watches make the dials less legible, but the trade off is having a beautiful machine to look at on your wrist.
